Duane Swygert Honored with the Order of the Palmetto for His Impact on Hunters for the Hungry

South Carolina Hunters for the Hungry is proud to celebrate Duane Merrill Swygert, a dedicated advocate for conservation and community service, who has been awarded The Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor.

On February 12, 2025, Governor Henry McMaster presented Swygert with the award in recognition of his lifetime of public service, including his leadership in state and federal law enforcement, economic development, and conservation efforts. However, one of his most meaningful contributions has been his work in expanding and strengthening South Carolina Hunters for the Hungry.

A Champion for Hunters for the Hungry

As a South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) board member, Swygert has played a vital role in growing the impact of Hunters for the Hungry. His leadership has helped secure funding, increase processor participation, and expand venison donations across the state, ensuring that more families in need receive fresh, high-protein meals. His dedication to the program has helped reinforce the positive role hunters play in conservation and community support.

“Duane Swygert’s commitment to serving others is unmatched,” said SCDNR Board Chairman Norman Pulliam. “He has been instrumental in supporting South Carolina Hunters for the Hungry, making sure more families have access to fresh, high-protein meals. We are proud to see him receive this well-deserved recognition.”

A Lifetime of Service

Swygert’s commitment to serving his community extends far beyond his work with SCHFH. His career includes roles as a U.S. Customs Service officer, U.S. Border Patrol agent, Hardeeville Police Chief, S.C. Highway Patrol trooper, and S.C. Law Enforcement Division (SLED) agent. He has also served as chairman of the Jasper County Republican Party for 20 years, advocating for community development and leadership.

A Well-Deserved Honor

“I am deeply honored to receive this award,” Swygert said. “Supporting South Carolina Hunters for the Hungry has been one of the most rewarding parts of my work. It’s about more than just hunting—it’s about helping people in need and making sure our natural resources are used for good.”

His leadership has helped position South Carolina Hunters for the Hungry as a model program, ensuring that hunters’ donations make a lasting impact on food security in our state. Thanks to his dedication, more families have access to high-quality protein, and the program continues to expand its reach year after year.

South Carolina Hunters for the Hungry congratulates Duane Swygert on this well-earned recognition. His commitment to conservation, community service, and fighting hunger has left a lasting impact on our state and beyond.
